Kitschy Cocktails
Is this the most “extra” outfit I’ve ever made?
I don’t know, I have made some pretty wild outfits, but this is definitely in the running!
I picked up this fabric with no real project in mind for it, but I just loved it so much I knew that someday I’d have to make something out of it. I don’t drink, so I don’t know why I connected with this print as strongly as I did, but I just love the colors and the illustration style.
When I found out about Resort-O-Rama, inspiration struck, and I had the project this fabric was waiting for! I decided to pair this print with a red watercolor plaid I’d picked up on clearance from JoAnn’s and make a set using Vogue 1176 as the base, paired with a bolero and overskirt.
In addition to changes to the fit from my mock up of Vogue 1176, I made this version with a longer skirt and a bigger bow; I thought that gave it a bit more of a vintage twist.
I was really unsure of how this was going to turn out until I’d finished it, and even then I wasn’t 100% sold on the overskirt (which I just winged— I didn’t have a pattern for it, and didn’t have a great plan for it, considering I couldn’t wear a petticoat with it but still wanted some volume), but I wound up really loving this outfit.
It was a blast to wear! Of course, I had to go just as loud with my accessories as I had with the fabric. I took pictures when I thought I had it all pulled together, but before running out the door, decided it needed even more, and went back and added a hair flower and some more bangles!
You can see my additions in these photos I took at the event, although I didn’t get as many pictures as I would have liked.
I don’t know when I’ll get the chance to wear something this kitschy next, but you can bet I will be taking any and every opportunity to pull this out of my closet!
It’s a bit less “extra” without the overskirt, so maybe I’ll be able to wear it that way sooner than I think!
