Get to Know Me… My Day Job!
I’m often asked what kind of job I have that I get to wear all of my fun, vintage-inspired dresses! The truth is that I work from home, and more often than not, I’m just wearing pajamas or loungewear when I’m working. I save my fun outfits for going out in the evenings and on weekends.
I’m also often asked if I work within the fashion industry in some capacity— nope! Would it surprise you to learn that I work for an IT company that provides support on Apple products to local individuals (primarily seniors)? Nothing to do with either my field of study (English Lit— that will have to be another post!) or my early career (which was fashion-adjacent— I worked as a bridal stylist for many years, but that’s a story for another post as well).
I wouldn’t call myself a tech hound, exactly, as most of my responsibilities concern scheduling, customer service, and marketing, but I do provide some simple IT support to our clients, referring them to one of our techs for a full appointment if it’s an issue beyond my knowledge base.
When I’m not writing blog posts about sewing and fashion, I’m often writing blog posts and marketing emails about Apple news and Apple products. Curious about some of the products (Apple and otherwise) that we wind up highly recommending to our clients? Read on!
-MacBook Air: https://amzn.to/3ZL4AFD This little laptop does some heavy lifting at a really reasonable price-point! It may be entry-level within Apple’s lineup, but it has more than enough bells and whistles for most users. Fun fact: you can often get a better price from Amazon than through Apple directly. You also have the choice of several colors. The Midnight is lovely, but be aware that it does show fingerprints like nobody’s business! The older M1 model is still a great computer, but the current M2 model is really fantastic.
-iMac: https://amzn.to/3D1XwKV It’s a classic! I use an iMac as my work machine. There’s something about working on a desktop that helps me focus, and I love being able to hook up a second monitor. Speaking of which…
-Dell Monitor: https://amzn.to/3XMnx96 This monitor is great, and much less expensive than Apple’s monitor! Even though we only service Apple computers, we aren’t affiliated with Apple, and will often recommend less expensive, equivalent options when it makes sense. Spend your money on your computer, and save a few bucks on accessories!
-MacBook Pro: https://amzn.to/3ZRPD4j If you are doing some really heavy lifting on your laptop (for instance, video editing), the MacBook Pro may be a better option for you than the MacBook Air! It’s a more expensive machine, but it’s also much more capable. If you’re just using your computer for basic tasks— think browsing the web, checking email, word processing, etc…— you probably don’t need the Pro!
-AirPods Pro (2nd Generation): https://amzn.to/3QYYa1r If you’re looking for a hands-free headset for any and all of your Apple products, the AirPods Pro are the best option. With a more comfortable, soft silicone tip that sits inside your ear, and great sound quality, they’re great for talking on the phone or watching movies on any of your devices. They pair to your Apple ID, so they’ll easily connect to all of your Apple devices.
-External Hard Drive: https://amzn.to/3Ww41fQ If you don’t have a backup, look at me. Look at me. Look into my eyes and listen— you need one. If you are still reading, this is the one piece of advice I want you to take away from this post! If you have an external hard drive you use as your backup, you can use Time Machine to create a backup. Then, if your computer crashes, you can very easily restore it (or use the backup to transfer all of your data to a new machine). Hell, even if you don't need to restore your entire computer— let’s say you accidentally delete a really important file— you can use Time Machine to recover it. Plus, if there’s an emergency (fires are a concern where I live) and you have to move fast, you can grab your backup even if you can’t feasibly get a bulky desktop out the door. If you’re traveling, you can also leave your backup with a trusted friend or family member in case there’s an emergency in your home that destroys your computer. There are a lot of reasons to have a backup, and not many excuses not to, especially when you can invest in a great external drive with lots of storage for not all that much money.
-Adaptors: https://amzn.to/3ZOqOXc Connectors have changed over the years, and many people at some point will realize that their basic USB cable that works with one device may not be compatible with whatever they’re trying to connect it to. Having a set of adaptors handy can save you a headache.
