Green Dupioni Cocktail Dress

Do you ever find fabrics you’ve completely forgotten about in your stash?

That’s what happened to me with this fabric, although I’m not holding it against myself as it had been in my stash for nearly two decades.

I’d originally purchased this fabric for a school project in high school— I made a dress to interpret a poem— and the leftover yardage had gotten buried and was forgotten throughout the intervening years and moves.

When I uncovered it recently, I thought it would make a nice holiday dress, but didn’t decide to actually use it until I had the opportunity to see a friend perform in a show. That seemed like the perfect occasion to make a nice dress for.

I used two patterns I know and love for this dress, the Lamour Dress sarong skirt (via Charm Patterns) and the bodice of Butterick B6413 with my usual modifications: a raised neckline, the keyhole filled in, and a slightly longer sleeve. This was my first time fully lining the skirt, and while I find the lining kept wanting to slip down below the hem, I do like the extra heft the skirt gets from having a full lining (as opposed to a facing).

While I made this during the holiday season, I definitely plan on changing up the accessories and wearing this year-round!

As you may have noticed, I’ve been including images of this dress styled two ways; one in a monochrome green way, and the other in a more traditionally Christmassy color scheme.

-Pattern: Charm Patterns Lamour sarong skirt paired with one of her older designs for Butterick for the bodice, B6413 with the neckline raised, keyhole filled in, and sleeve lengthened.

-Fabric is an emerald green dupioni silk
