Performing Poodles

After making my pink polka dot wearable muslin Peggy dress, I knew I wanted to work with this playful flannel print! You know I’m a sucker for a good novelty print, and these poodles were way too cute for me to pass up.

The only thing I wasn’t sure about is the color— this kind of drab beige looks terrible on me! I decided to draft a Peter Pan collar for the dress to keep that beige from being right up against my face. To draft the collar, I just laid the front and back bodice pieces flat on the table and overlapped by 5/8” at the shoulder seam, then laid some tracing paper on top and copied the neckline shape on one side, and the shape I wanted for the collar on the other. Et, voila! A collar pattern.

Once I decided to add that detail, I also decided to take inspiration from one of the “inspiration dresses” that Gertie shared with her Patreon subscribers as a hint before the Peggy Bodice’s release.

I thought this placket was such a fun detail, and would be relatively easy to recreate. Spoiler alert: it was! I photographed the process, so I’ll have details about how to create this design feature here on my blog shortly.

I also decided to add black piping to the under bust seam, and to finish the sleeve hem, in order to tie that detail from the placket in to the rest of the dress. I really like how it turned out!

One thing you may want to know is that this short sleeve is shorter than the short sleeve marking on the Peggy bodice pattern.

I wound up accidentally sewing one of the pack pieces to the dress at a 90 degree angle to how it was supposed to go. I’m still not really sure how this happened, but the long and the short of it is that I trimmed the discrepancy in length from the front and back “sleeve” opening before I realized WHY they were so far off, and then had to trim the other sleeve to match. It wound up working out, and I’m happy with the sleeve length! I guess that just goes to show that not every mistake is the end of the world!
