Valentine’s Day Fabrics
Are you planning any makes for Valentine’s Day? I’ve been working on some separates, and those may be my only Valentine’s Day makes this year, but that doesn’t stop me from looking at fabric and daydreaming about the possibilities.
If you’re like me and prefer to shop online for fabric (I know, I know— there’s nothing like touching it in a store! Unfortunately, I don’t have much to choose from locally), Amazon can be a great resource! I’ve successfully ordered fabric from them many times. Only once was I disappointed, and that’s because my yardage shipped as two one yard pieces instead of one continuous piece, but that’s the only time I’ve had that happen to me.
I went through and picked out some fabric to share with you all that I’ve been feeling inspired by!
-Pink Gingham: Gingham is a classic print for a reason! It’s suited to lots of different designs, and isn’t too busy for lots of seams. This looks like it would be a really pretty bubblegum pink in person, and I’d wear something like this all through spring and summer, not just at Valentine’s Day. Maybe a classic gathered skirt paired with a white blouse? I think that would be darling, and for a more overt Valentine’s Day look, you could pair it with other shades of red and pink for your blouse, cardigan, belt, shoes, etc…
-Heart Tulle: Ok, full disclosure: I absolutely do not have the patience to work with a material like this right now, so there’s no way in hell I’m doing anything with this fabric this Valentine’s Day. But I still love it, and I want to see other people make cute things with it. I love red and pink together, so if I were going to do anything with this material, I’d probably line it with a fun pink, but I could see it being a kind of sweet-and-sexy look with a nude lining and plunging neckline.
-Conversation Hearts: Yeah, I made a dress out of a conversation heart print last Valentine’s Day… But that doesn’t mean I can’t make another one! It’s a fun, kitschy print, and I’m all about this. Besides, this one is red, and that print was pink, so they’re TOTALLY different. Right?
-Blue Heart Gingham: Maybe pinks and red aren’t your thing, but you still want to join in on the Valentine’s Day fun. I get it. They’re not for everyone one! Or maybe you just want something that’s more subtly themed— this light blue gingham might be perfect for you! Can’t you just picture this making the cutest little romper? If it were me, I’d pair it with a fuzzy pink sweater, pink platform sandals, and some heart sunglasses. Oh shit. Do I have to make this now? And my husband wonders how I wound up with my current fabric stash. “It’s called VISION.”
-Wine Stretch Velvet: Go make yourself a sexy date night dress. Don’t live in novelty prints like I do, make something suitable for an adult who pays their bills on time and meal plans and, I don’t know, gets dressed up on romantic holidays. But seriously, how lovely would a classic cocktail dress in this shade of velvet be? Bonus: stretch velvet is extra comfy.
-Red Rose Jacquard: This stunning red jacquard with roses woven into it would make such a romantic Valentine’s day dress! Can’t you just see it made up as a slinky slip dress? Or a swirly circle skirt?
-Hot Pink Stretch Velvet: This color is so vibrant and fun! I’d sew with this any time of year, but it would be especially appropriate around Valentine’s day! I love the idea of doing a more traditional style in a really funky color.
