Practically Perfect
I love sewing for Disneyland.
Disneyland is one of my favorite places, and thinking up fun outfits to wear there is a big part of how I enjoy the anticipation of an upcoming visit.
I’m not exactly sure what sparked this idea, but I’ve always loved Mary Poppins’ “Jolly Holiday” outfit, and at some point in occurred to me that the Charm Patterns Peggy Bodice (available to Gertie’s Patreon members) would be an easy way to get the effect of this outfit without creating a literal reproduction.
I used a lightweight cotton with embroidered eyelet detail at the border, and used a solid red fabric at the midriff to emulate the waist cincher. I also used narrow ribbon to echo the boning channels on Mary Poppins’ original dress.
To bring the dress’ appearance even closer to the original costume, I used several widths of lace to create a ruffled front for the upper bodice, and attached some lace to the neckline to create a standing collar. I also made small red bows, which I attached at regular intervals to the skirt.
The hat was a bit of a project, too! I used a hat that came attached to a headband at a jaunty angle with a black ribbon; I reattached the hat on the headband to sit straight on my head, replaced the black ribbon with a white one, stitched tulle to the brim, and then attached some faux flowers.
I’m really pleased with the finished look! This outfit was a big hit at Disneyland, too; a cast member made some magic for my husband and I on our first ride of the day and said that because I was practically perfect in every way, I shouldn’t have to wait in line! I also heard a lot of little kids saying different versions of “look, it’s Mary Poppins!” as I walked by; their reactions were very sweet.
