Rose Tile Dress

When you plan a project, do you start with the fabric and then pick the pattern to suit, or start with a pattern and source a fabric you think it would look good in?

I almost always start with a fabric and try to find a pattern I think will work well with it, but this dress was really and truly designed to showcase this spectacular fabric!

Because the fabric has such a bold pattern on it, I knew the dress style needed to be relatively simple and unfussy so it could just let the fabric do its thing with as few design elements and seam lines to interrupt it as possible.

I turned to a favorite of mine, B5748. I essentially use this pattern the way designers use a sloper, adjusting the neckline, sleeve, design elements, etc… to suit whatever style I have in mind. For this dress, I chose to do a sweetheart neckline and a half sleeve.

I’m pleased with the finished result— this is such a gorgeous print, and I love how many colors are in it! That also means it’s a blast to accessorize, as I can choose from several colors in the print to mix up the look. For as bold as the pattern is, it’s pretty flexible in that regard.
