Red Fans Sarong Dress

After mashing up the sarong skirt from the Charm Patterns Lamour Dress with the bodice from Butterick B6412 for my tweed dress, I was itching to do it again!

I really love this combination together, and I can pretty confidently say this won’t be the last time I use these two patterns together! It feels very glam, and even though most of my dresses have fuller skirts, I actually prefer a pencil skirt! I just find full skirts easier to wear in less dressy settings, so that’s what I make more often, since I love being able to wear my dresses any chance I get!

I originally wanted to make this outfit to wear on Valentine’s day, but it wound up being pretty form-fitting, and I also wanted to be comfortable while sitting through a fairly long formal dinner, so I opted to wear a more forgiving style. No matter! I’m still happy to have this dress, and will look forward to pulling it out for another dressy event at some point in the future.

This dress also has the distinction of being entirely composed of materials from my stash! I have a pretty sizable fabric stash, but I still often find myself needing to get a bit of coordinating fabric for a lining, or buttons, or another notion like just-the-right-shade-of-thread to complete a project. I happened to have some red cotton that worked great to line this dress with, and I also had these bold black buttons that I’d originally purchased for another project, but ended up deciding they were too big for that.

This dress came together quickly, probably in part due to the fact that I’d so recently constructed the same thing for my tweed dress.

Do you find yourself getting stuck on a particular project once you make one and it comes out well? I joke that I just make the same few dresses over and over again, and there’s definitely truth in that! I have to push myself to try new things, since it can feel very satisfying to go back to the favorites I am comfortable making and feel confident will turn out well and fit nicely.
