Santa’s Helper!

It may be a new year, but I’m still not done talking about my holiday makes! I love sewing for holidays, and Christmas and Halloween are my favorites!

All told, I wound up making nine new Christmas outfits this year (including a green dupioni cocktail dress that I’m definitely not relegating to the Christmas season). I’ve already shared many of them, but I’ve still got a few more I’d like to tell you about.

This was actually the last of my Christmas makes. I’d hoped to make two more Christmas outfits, but wound up taking about a week off of sewing, which left me with only a couple of days to make the three pieces for this ensemble.

I’d ordered this bolt of fabric from JoAnn and initially wanted to make a dress for a hostess set to wear over green velvet leggings, but my serger had a broken part, and with all of the shipping issues, it was taking forever to come in and get repaired, and I didn’t want to deal with a really fiddly way to finish the seams for a hostess set where the inside of the skirt would be visible.

So, I decided to make a few separates to wear on Christmas Day that I could then mix and match next year! I returned to some old favorites for this outfit. The blouse is the Charm Patterns Rita blouse, the skirt is just a basic gathered skirt using Gertie’s Picnic Skirt tutorial (available on YouTube), but modified to have a back zip instead of the front button closures, and the bolero is the Charm Patterns Dorothy bolero.

I’m really happy with how this came together! I felt like a Christmas elf wearing it, even if the waistband got a little snug after Christmas dinner! I guess I should have also made a matching apron, since I wound up cooking in this outfit— my husband was distressed by how close my feather fascinator got to the burner when I was getting dishes in and out of the oven— but luckily (surprisingly!) there were no spills.
