Poinsettias & Polka Dots
As much as I love an all-out Christmassy novelty print, it’s nice to have some Christmas-themed prints that are a bit more subtle as well.
Ok, I wouldn’t call this print itself subtle— it’s bold and fairly large in scale— but the Christmas theme is fairly subtle. If you don’t look closely, you may not notice that the flowers are poinsettias, and the peachy-pink background color doesn’t scream “CHRISTMAS!” the way a fiery red or emerald green does.
My mom always loved poinsettias, and I grew up with them in the house (or on the front porch once pets were involved) during the holiday season. She had this poinsettia brooch made of fish scales purchased at a church craft fair (this was Florida— crafts using marine life don’t seem as bizarre there as they may elsewhere!) that just fascinated me. I wish I could find something like that now, but in the meantime, I at least have this pretty print to admire.
I used a tried and true pattern, Butterick B6412. I’ve altered the sleeve to be above the elbow, raised the neckline, added a gathered skirt instead of the skirt that comes with the pattern, and also added piping to the neckline and sleeve opening. I don’t think this was my absolute favorite make this holiday season, but it’s a sweet dress nonetheless!
